·     Please read this and print it for future reference. The information provided here is a combination of general information and most frequently asked questions.

·     Union Dues are due and payable by the tenth of each month. WORKING members

must pay during the current month. If you are late and do not pay  in the current

month dues owed by the last day of that month) a $10 late fee charge will be assessed.

You should receive our courtesy statement around the middle of the month. If you do

not receive it by the 25th of the month you should call our office. If you let your dues

go unpaid for three months (delinquent), a $50 late fee is required by the UA and will

be charged to you and you will be subject to being removed from the job until all dues

 are paid in full.

·     Your monthly dues are calculated at two times the hourly rate plus $22.00 (or the current amount charged by the UA). Refer to your dispatch slip to insure you are paying the right amount. The monthly dues along with the hourly dues checkoff are tax deductible and you should keep records of these dues amounts for your tax preparation person. Also, don't throw away the check stubs that come with your paycheck. They are valuable records should you need to recreate your working history.

·      Dispatching hours are only from 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM Monday - Friday. Members can only sign the out-of work books during dispatch hours of 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM. Any Building Trades Journeyman must be (current) PIPE Certified to sign Book 1 or Book 2 out of work list. Members can only be dispatched if they are a member in good standing (not delinquent, 3 months behind of dues).

·     Call our recorded message at (858) 554-0590, after 4:30 P.M. (weekdays) to hear announcements for upcoming jobs available (this recorded message is updated daily), when the next Union meeting will be held, for upcoming training classes, for Executive Board dates and times, and other pertinent information. If you are out of town you can call toll free at (866) 554-0586 and press 2 when the message comes on.

·     Local 230’s Apprentice and Journeymen Training Center is located at 6225 Federal Blvd, San Diego, CA 92114 (South of Highway 94 near Lemon Grove). The daytime phone  for the J. A. C. secretary (Caryn Bateman) is 619-262-7589 and the weld shop (and nighttime phone) is 619-266-1325. The Training Center Office is open Monday through Thursday 7:30  a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The weld/brazing shop is open Monday through Wednesday 8:00 am. to 5:00 p.m. AND Thursday 12:00 noon to 8:00 p.m.  Both the Training Center and Weld Shop are closed on Friday.

Evening Apprentice class hours are normally from 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM. Journeyman up-grade classes usually start at 5:00 PM. Be sure to call the school before attending  to be sure a holiday or summer vacation closure is not in effect. All classes are available to all members in good standing on a first come-first serve basis. Call the J. A. C. secretary or your business agent to sign up for classes.

·     All Fringe Benefit contributions (including the Vacation and Holiday amount), paid by your employer, are sent to the Southern California  Pipe Trades Administrative Corporation in Los Angeles by the 15th of the month in the following month in which they were earned. Example: hours worked in June are reported by the 15th of July.

·     Your Health & Welfare Medical/Dental insurance coverage eligibility will begin after you have worked sufficient hours at the current contribution amount  to get $1,565.20 in your "hour bank" at the Trust Fund. This is calculated on an hourly contribution rate of $6.02 per hour. Your Trust Fund  insurance will become effective the first day of the month following the month that you have $1,565.20 in your account. You will receive a package of information from the Trust Fund. If you have any questions call  the office or call (800) 595-7473 to speak to someone at the Trust Fund: ask for Medical Eligibility! Remember to use AHF doctors and hospitals to minimize your out-of-pocket expenses.

·     If you wish to participate in the employee voluntary 401 (k) plan, the forms are available here at the office to begin deductions. Be sure to ask for a new election form or a new complete packet if participating for the first time.  This is a tax-deferred plan for savings that will be available when you retire. For every dollar you save for retirement and have deducted you will see approximately a fifty cent reduction on your bottom line.

·     The Southern California Pipe Trades Trust Fund mails statements four times each year (called "quarterly statements").  Check the hours reported against your check stubs- the statement will show hours worked, pension credits earned and Vacation & Holiday  account balance and medical eligibility. You should keep all of your Trust Fund quarterly  statements for future reference. Hours reported are not cumulative but on a quarterly basis only. You must have a minimum of proven hours to work in other locals that can be verified by your quarterly statements.

·     The National Pension Trust Fund  sends annual statements only once a year (now on your birth date) and they are received around the time of your birth date. The yearly Summary Reports also come to your home (around the first of May) and contain the latest in benefit calculations and reflect any increases to the benefit amount. Be sure to check your statement and be sure all hours are reported.

·    General membership meetings are held on the second Friday of each month at 7:00 PM at Paulson Hall (at the rear of the building). Local 230 is dark in the month of August. The executive board meets a 6:00 PM before each meeting to conduct any business brought before it. You should plan to attend the monthly union meetings and learn the business of your union and how your union operates. There are always refreshments at the end of each meeting so come on out and join your fellow brothers and sisters for an evening of informative discussion.

·     Please request a copy of the U. A. Constitution,  Local 230 by-laws, and a copy of the contract under which you work and become familiar with your rights and responsibilities as a member of Local 230. Local 230 operates for the benefit of all it's members. Be sure to attend meetings,  participate in its functions, and support its efforts for the success of all working people in the piping trades. You will need to get a specific place at home to keep all your important union related information so you can resurrect the information in the future. A box in one of your closets will work fine. Put all your check stubs in the box. Don't just throw them away. It is your record of when you worked and how many hours per week you worked. Along with the pay stubs, you should keep all statements from the Trust Fund and National Pension along with any medical statements you get from the Trust Fund to be sure they get paid correctly, etc.
