Now That You Have Applied to the Apprentice program, What’s Next?

Frequently Asked Questions

Apprenticeship is a combination of “on the job training” and classroom instruction.  First and second year apprentices may be assigned to attend daytime training.  Daytime training will be scheduled one day every other week.  Third through fifth year apprentices will attend evening classes scheduled twice weekly. Apprentices work for local contractors under the guidance of a Journeyman during the workweek and are paid by the contractors for work performed while learning their trade.

How long is the Apprenticeship?

The Plumber\Pipe fitter Apprenticeship is a five-year program.

Will I get college credit for this apprenticeship?

YES.  The Plumber/Pipefitters Apprenticeship classes are credited through San Diego Community College.  Many apprentices complete their general education course and receive an Associate Degree in Plumbing and Pipefitting.

How much does apprenticeship cost?

The only cost associated with the Apprenticeship Program is the initiation fee to join the local union, monthly dues and your textbooks each semester.

How much are apprentices paid?

Starting wages for a first-year apprentice is $16.65/hour, plus benefits.  As apprentices complete each year of work and classroom instruction, they are advanced to the next wage level.  The hourly wage for a fifth year apprentice is $29.96/hour, plus benefits.  A Journeyman currently earns $33.29/hour, plus benefits.

Does this program qualify for VA benefits?

Yes, our program is approved for VA benefits. Upon acceptance into the apprentice program, the administrative assistant will assist you with the required forms.

Pre-employment drug screening?

Most employers in Local 230’s jurisdiction require drug testing.  Local 230 will give you more information on their policy.  You will also be required to take a drug test prior to being accepted into the apprenticeship program.  The Committee pays the cost for this test.

                             Application waiting list?

Your application will be kept on file in the Apprenticeship Office for two years.  Depending on the amount of work available in the area, you could be on this list for two years.  After two years you would need to submit a new application with current test scores from the San Diego Community College.

You must inform the apprenticeship office in writing of any change in your address or telephone number. You can contact Caryn Bateman at the Training Center at 6225 Federal Blvd, San Diego, Ca 92114, (619) 262-7589. We will first attempt to contact you by telephone.  As a result, it is very important that you leave a good telephone number that you can be reached or phone number where we can leave a message.  If you are unable to be reached, we will go to the next person on the list.
